Hi there, So the past couple of months me and 3 other friends have been playing AoE 2 DE pretty much constantly. We used to play AoE II back in the day when we were just kids. We are about 30 now and love how Age has come back alive. We noticed 1 thing however. The game does not give us an option to choose our starting positions. We tried changing our colors to match the ones on the map
Select the “Port Settings” tab. Under the “Port Settings” tab, select the “Bits per Second” option and set it to 115200. Select the “Flow Control” option and set it to None. Select “OK” to save your settings. Start your AoE2 game. When you are ready to connect, press the “Connect” button in the game menu.
If you go to Multiplayer --> Lobby Browser --> Create Lobby, there is a drop down list for changing the server region. If you scroll to the very bottom there is an option to "Use Local Lan Server". I haven't tried it myself though, but it might be what you are looking for.
