Do so swiftly, thereby minimizing oil loss. Even though slight vacuum holds the charge of oil inside the gear case, inevitably some oil will spill over into the drain pan. Hand tighten both the lower and upper drain plugs and wipe off any oil that may have streaked onto the lower unit. Pulling the plug on your lower unit will extend its life.
Start the engine. Shift the gear selector into the corresponding mode – “Park” or “Neutral”. Unscrew the inspection plug at the bottom of the gearbox. If the fluid leaks out of the hole, there is no need to top it up. Screw the cap back in. If nothing leaks out, this means there isn’t enough oil.
